Organic Labeling Questioned

Purity of Federal ‘Organic’ Label Is Questioned

Consumers in the know are questioning the integrity of federal organic labeling these days. What makes a product organic is critically determined by the non-use of pesticides and the use of natural ingredients. The major dilemma all stems from gargantuan corporations that persuade the USDA with money to pass and allow unnatural ingredients to slip through the crack. If instances like these continue to happen the organic label will be diluted.

I did not know that the USDA allowed non-organic material in foods labeled organic. I think the USDA should be more strict on enforcing those standards, or change the label to read “almost organic” or something like that. According to the article it does seem that the non-organic ingrediants that are added are in the food to improve its quality. The organic food with in-organic ingrediants is still healthier and better for the environment than food that doesn’t attempt to reach the organic standards.
